Hasbara Fellowships

Hasbara Fellowships is a leadership development seminar for top Jewish university students from across North America. Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, there is a necessity to develop young Jewish leaders who are educated and knowledgeable about Israeli history and politics, as well as capable of communicating a pro-Israel message to the Diaspora community, specifically on college campuses.

Coming up with SAFI (Student Allliance For Israel)

On Wednesday November 1st Israeli University students present: “Israeli Society and Response to the War with Hezballah.” It's a discussion about political cartoons, Israeli sketch comedy clips, and other forms of Israeli media and their coverage of the war. This should be a very engaging hour!- I'll be going to this so I'll post my reviews.

David and I did some brainstorming about an Investment Campaign event in DC so stay tuned. I'm excited about it- more to come about that. I should've given David some chicken but I gave him stale coffee instead. If you read this David, I hope you're feeling better.

USC Celebrates Israel

Members of SCSI at USC put together an amazing Israel Palooza celebration on Wednesday, October 18, 2006.
Hasbara Fellow Lian Kimia Lian Kimia welcomes USC students to the Israel programs booth by explaining the various ways for students to visit Israel.
Students drop by Tommy Trojan Walk to participate in the Israel Palooza celebration by purchasing IDF t-shirts.

The "Aroma Cafe" was the biggest hit of the day, where burekas, falafel, and ruggalach were served... for free!

On Wednesday, October 18, 2006, from 11am-4pm, students at the University of Southern California (USC) came together to celebrate Israel. Throughout the day, an estimated 300-400 USC students dropped by to take part in the festivities, stopping by booths which offered a variety of information about Israel. Tables included such topics as art, technology, politics, history of Israel, Israel programs, Judaism, and Israel activism, as well as t-shirts and books for sale. The "Aroma Cafe" was set up to serve over 150 guests some burekas, falafel, salads, pita, ruggalach, and cookies... all for free!

Posters of Israeli culture, humanitarian efforts, human rights, and other topics were put up across the quad. Students had a chance to partake in a mock-IDF training course on a moon bounce obstacle course. Charlotte Korchak and friends promised to "retrain" over again with every participant who wanted to try the obstacle course out.

Members of SCSI worked for months to put on a partay for students on campus who would otherwise not have known how amazing Israel is (not like other schools that just give away bracelets and pamphlets). Even some faculty members were presents, in and out as the day progressed, to show their support for Israel's vibrant culture and history. All together, it was a unique experience being brought to the USC campus, unlike any event put on in previous years. The event definitely marked SCSI's presence on campus, as many of the guests were impressed with the makeup and grandiose look of the event. A very positive experience for the group and for the campus as a whole.

Kuddos to Hasbara Fellows Abby Korchak, Charlotte Korchak, Taly Golan, Lian Kimia, and incoming Fellow Stephen Opper, members of SCSI and everyone who participated in the event. Way to go West Coast!

Elran will see you in the coming weeks on campuses in Colorado, Washington, Northern California, and Arizona.

Peace. Posted by Picasa

JC's perspective from the Road

Three weeks, 19 campuses, tons of Israel, tons of fun!!!

Having never visited much of the Midwest, I was really excited to go out to Michigan, Chicago, and Ohio State.

Ann Arbor hosted a lovely Israel Fest with Israeli hip-hop, falafel, moon bounces, and many students interested in Israel. Borne out of that Israel fest, AMI with Hasbara Fellowships is putting together a Conference for Israel Activists on October 22nd.

After the holiday, I visited the windy city of Chicago. I know it was only early fall but it wasn't that windy. I am sure my next trip out there will be blustery and frigid. In Chicago I was able to visit 5 major schools, capping with a campus tour of Northwestern with Hasbara Fellow Benji Rubin.

Chicago is definitely no New York but a place with serious Israel activists and a city to match.

As I look back on my experiences from all travels, I have been inspired by the passion of those students who showed me around and met with me. Being a Campus Coordinator has allowed me to meet so many dedicated and creative students. As I plan my next rounds of trips I look forward to visiting campuses Indiana University ,University of Minnesota, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

This week my travels take me to Beantown. Harvard students for Israel is hosting Israel fest. After which I will make my way down to Providence, Brown University, meeting with representatives from the Hillel and numerous campus leaders.
Last week Columbia University's College Republicans hosted Walid Shoebat. Although is was raining and very cold many students came out to hear the Former PLO Terrorist speak out.
Connecticut is off to a great new year!! Last week I went to visit UConn, University of Hartford and CCSU to see how things are going and visit our amazing Hasbara fellows!! University of Hartford is hoping to have a one day activism day before the semester is over along with neighboring schools. When I went to visit CCSU I sat in on their meeting about programming on campus and after met some very dedicated students that I hope to meet with. After meeting with different organizations on the various campuses we hope to have many programming!
